First XV Come up short in Clonmel
November 14, 2023Omagh Accies 2XV - 27
Donaghadee 1XV – 7
Omagh Accies 2XV made the long journey to Donaghadee 1XV on Saturday in their second game of the Junior Shield. Despite the playing surface, Omagh played some enterprising rugby to come away with 5 tries and a 7-27 bonus point win.
Playing down the hill in the first half, Omagh kicked off in the autumnal sunshine and soon got about their business as tight head Mark Smyth trundled over from close in to send Omagh into an early 0-5 lead. On a tough day from the tee, the conversion was missed alongside a penalty but Omagh improved their lead when Reece Braden dotted down for a converted try to send Omagh into the half time break with a 0-12 lead.
After the break Omagh played up the hill but had the elements behind them and hoped to push on and improve the scoreboard further. Despite pushing the home team off their own scrum Omagh conceded possession again and Donaghadee went straight through from 20 metres to dot down and reduce their arrears to 7-12. This served as a wake up call for Omagh as from here on in there was only going to be one winner.
Further tries from Jack Beattie, Jordan Brolly and Kaine Holden saw Omagh pull away from the hosts and finish the game 7-27 winners. Positives on the day would have been Omagh’s scrum and their ability to grind down the hosts but things to improve on would be the lineout, Omagh’s inability to stick to their gameplan and their kicking for posts.
Omagh 2XV have now won 2 from 2 in the Junior Shield which leaves a winner takes all clash with Academy RFC in January to see who will make it to the semi finals. Next up for Omagh 2XV is Rainey 2XV in the 2XV League this Saturday at the Thomas Mellon Playing Fields – kick off 2.30pm – all support would be greatly appreciated.
