Omagh 36-0 Bangor

On Saturday 26th September, Omagh Accies welcomed Bangor 1st and 2nd XVs to the Thomas Mellon Playing Fields for an action packed afternoon of rugby.

The Omagh 1st XV went into the fixture looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the Championship 1 campaign, sitting second in the league table after three wins from three. Their visitors, Bangor, arrived in eighth place and were determined to close the gap and make up some lost ground.

Meanwhile, the Accies 2nd XV faced Bangor 2nd XV in the Provincial Premiership 1, with the two sides going head-to-head in a clash between first and third in the table.

The stage was set for an exciting afternoon, with both Omagh sides looking to build on their strong starts to the season.

Omagh 1XV started the game in dominant fashion with regaining kick off to work their way into Bangors 22. Following a front foot scrum, Omagh went over for the first try of the afternoon from a short pick and go by Simon Creane, converted by Connor Watherson Spencer.

The home side then found themselves in a kicking battle with Bangor, who later broke the line entering into Omagh’s 5m line. However with strong defence the Omagh line remained solid.

After some difficult conditions, Omagh found themselves just outside Bangors 22m line, with a clean lineout, Connor Watherson Spencer broke the line after multiple dummy passes. The ball was moved to the edge with Joseph Duff breaking through and scoring Omagh’s second. With Connor WS converting to take the score to 14-0.

Again Bangor were challenging the Omagh defence with some great kicking, working their way into the Omagh 5m line once more however due to handling errors the Accies were able to hold out.

Omagh later in the half found themselves inside the Bangor 22m line with a strong driving maul seeing Phil Ewing going over for his 6th try in 3 games, and Omagh’s 3rd of the afternoon.

Omagh later found themselves down to 14 Men with a yellow card for a high tackle, with Bangor having an advantage they were looking to advance up the pitch however with handling errors and a struggle to hold out at set piece this proved challenging.

Omagh had barely returned to a full complement when another high tackle saw the Accies reduced to 14 men once again. Shortly after Omagh received the ball from a forward pass by Bangor, where Fintan Lagan moved the ball to the touchline which saw Sean Kerr breaking multiple tackles before setting Lagan through for the 4th and bonus point try for Omagh. With Bangor again surrendering possession, Omagh moved the ball quickly to the edge, with Scott Barr breaking down the wing before Fintan Lagan finished the move for his second try in the space of 10 minutes.

The Accies continued to turn the screw and again found themselves inside the Bangor 5-metre line. Tino produced an excellent offload to Sean Kerr, who broke through two tackles to cross for Omagh’s sixth try of the afternoon, stretching the home side’s lead and finishing on the scoreboard at 36-0.

On the neighbouring pitch, Omagh 2XV put on a similarly impressive display of rugby against Bangor 2XV.

With the sides separated by just seven points at half-time, with Omagh leading 12-5, the outcome remained finely balanced. However, the Accies stepped up the intensity in the second half, taking control of the game and finishing strongly to secure a convincing 36-12 victory.

Omagh’s tries came from George Donnell, Shea Daly, who crossed twice, Adam Porter, and Ryan Young, who also scored twice. Oisin Hone added a further try along with three successful conversions to complete an excellent afternoon for the Accies 2XV.
