Clinical Dromore punish Accies in top of the table clash
Dromore RFC 36 – Omagh Accies RFC 19
Omagh Accies suffered a setback in their Championship 1 campaign on Saturday as a clinical Dromore side claimed a 36–19 victory in a top of the table encounter.
Despite a spirited second half fightback that yielded three tries, the Accies were ultimately punished by a ruthless home side who made the most of their opportunities.
With the low autumn sunshine providing the perfect backdrop, conditions were ideal for rugby, but Omagh’s preparations were disrupted before kick-off when influential playmaker Connor Watherston-Spencer was ruled out at the end of the warm up. Matters worsened just five minutes into the contest when Alastair Beckett limped off with a knee injury.
Despite these setbacks, Omagh started brightly, with powerful carries from Noa Euta and Jamie Sproule taking play deep into Dromore territory.
However, it was the hosts who struck first. After gathering an Omagh kick, Dromore broke through the defensive line before a clever offload created the opening for a converted try beneath the posts.
A well struck penalty from 40 metres extended their advantage to 10–0, but the contest remained competitive as both sides produced some excellent passages of attacking rugby.
With half time approaching, Omagh suffered another blow when Fintan Lagan was yellow carded for a deliberate knock on. Dromore capitalised immediately, executing a slick scrum move to release their winger for a converted try on the stroke of half-time.

Omagh began the second half on the front foot, working their way into the Dromore ‘22’, but were caught out when the hosts pounced on a loose ball. The Dromore centre chipped ahead before winning the race to touch down, completing a devastating 70-metre counterattack.
The hosts were now in full flow, securing their bonus point with a well executed catch and drive before their hooker broke free down the right wing to power over for a fifth try.
Facing a daunting deficit, Omagh finally found their attacking rhythm and produced a spirited response.
Pulusi Atina Toeanna drew two defenders before releasing Ben Henry, who showed tremendous pace to beat three defenders and race over for a superb converted try.
The Accies continued to apply pressure, and following a succession of penalties inside the Dromore ‘22’, the ball was moved wide for David Braden to power over for Omagh’s second try.
A third soon followed when a clean lineout take from Matthew Clyde provided the platform for a powerful driving maul, with hooker Phil Ewing emerging from the pack to claim the score.
With a fourth try and a valuable bonus point now within reach, Omagh threw everything at the home defence. Joe Duff and Noa Euta both threatened with marauding runs, but Dromore held firm to deny the visitors another score.

Ultimately, it was a frustrating afternoon for the Accies, who paid a heavy price for costly errors against a Dromore side that punished those mistakes.
While the late three try fightback demonstrated plenty of character, Omagh will know that improvements are needed if they are to maintain their challenge at the top of Championship 1.
There will be little time to dwell on the defeat, with second placed Portadown visiting the Thomas Mellon Playing Fields this Saturday in another crucial Championship 1 encounter.
