Hone Hattrick sends Omagh Accies Top of the Championship 1.
Limavady RFC 13 – 39 Omagh Accies RFC
Omagh Accies climbed to the top of the Championship 1 table following an impressive 39–13 bonus-point victory away to Limavady RFC, with winger Oisin Hone stealing the headlines courtesy of a superb hat-trick.
In perfect playing conditions at the John Hunter Memorial Grounds, Omagh produced a commanding performance, scoring six tries to secure a valuable away victory.
The home side made the brighter start, taking an early lead through a penalty after Omagh were penalised for offside. However, Connor Watherston-Spencer soon levelled proceedings with a well-struck penalty of his own after the Limavady defence too strayed offside.
Omagh began to establish a foothold in the contest, and grabbed the first try of the day. A well-executed catch and drive, with Josh McKinley laying the foundations, brought Omagh deep into Limavady territory. From the resulting play, Scott Elliott, operating in the unfamiliar scrumhalf position, sold the defence a clever dummy before darting over for an unconverted try.
Limavady responded with their second penalty of the afternoon, despite a strong defensive effort from the Accies, to keep themselves within touching distance.
However, Omagh struck again before the interval with an excellent team try. Matthew Clyde confidently fielded a high ball before Robbie Sproule broke through the Limavady defence on a powerful 20 metre run. The ball was worked wide to Oisin Hone, who showed his finishing ability to cross in the left corner. Watherston-Spencer added the conversion to give Omagh a 15–6 advantage at the break.
Half-time: Limavady RFC 6 – 15 Omagh Accies RFC
Omagh emerged strongly after the restart and quickly extended their advantage through Matthew Clyde. Following a dominant five metre scrum, the Accies pack drove the Limavady scrum backwards, allowing Clyde to ground the ball for a deserved try. Watherston-Spencer added the extras.
To their credit, Limavady refused to lie down and responded with a converted try of their own. A very flat pass released their blindside winger, who crossed to the right of the posts to reduce the deficit to 22–13.
With the home side threatening to build momentum, Omagh responded in emphatic fashion.
A well worked set piece move involving David Braden and Robbie Sproule created the opening for Joe Duff, who finished to secure Omagh’s bonus-point fourth try. The successful conversion further extended the visitors’ lead.
The Accies were now firmly in control, and Hone soon grabbed his second try of the afternoon. Some excellent interplay between Noa Euta and Scott Barr opened up the Limavady defence, with Barr delivering the final pass for Hone to finish superbly in the corner.
There was still time for Hone to complete his hat-trick and put the finishing touches on an excellent away performance.
Following a lineout secured by Clyde, Omagh established a driving maul which moved infield, drawing the Limavady defence with it. Hone spotted the space opening on the blindside and showed excellent awareness and pace to scamper over for his third try of the afternoon.
It was a fitting conclusion to a dominant second half display from the Accies, who combined powerful forward play with some excellent attacking rugby to claim all five league points.
Full-time: Limavady RFC 13 – 39 Omagh Accies RFC
The victory sees Omagh Accies move to the summit of the Championship 1 table. With six tries, a strong set piece platform and plenty of attacking intent, the Accies will take considerable confidence from their latest victory as they look to maintain their momentum into a crucial few weeks ahead.
